Differences between Rouen Ducks and Mallards
When it comes to bird watching, ducks are a popular sight. Two of the most common duck breeds are the Rouen and Mallard ducks. While they may look similar at first glance, there are distinct differences between the two breeds.
Physical Appearance
One of the most noticeable differences between Rouen and Mallard ducks is their physical appearance. Rouen ducks are larger and heavier than Mallards. They have a plump, rounded body and a broad, flat head. Rouen ducks are typically brown with a greenish-black iridescent sheen on their heads and necks.
In contrast, Mallards have a more slender body and a smaller head. They have a distinct green head with a white collar and chestnut-brown breast.
Behavior
Another difference between the Rouen and Mallard ducks is their behavior. Rouen ducks are generally more docile and calm than Mallards. They are less likely to fly away when approached and are more likely to be found waddling along the ground. Mallards, on the other hand, are more skittish and are quick to take flight when threatened. They are also more likely to be found swimming in ponds and lakes.
Diet
Both Rouen and Mallard ducks are omnivores, but their diets can differ. Rouen ducks are often raised for their meat, so they are typically fed a diet that is high in protein. Mallards, on the other hand, have a more varied diet that includes insects, plants, and small animals.
Understanding these differences can help bird enthusiasts appreciate these two distinct duck breeds.
